SCOTTSDALE 2010 SUNSHINE AND FUN
By D C Egan

Scottsdale was at its sunshine perfect best from opening day on Thursday the 11th until Friday the 19th. After that it was “run for cover” as it poured rain off and on throughout the final weekend.

On championship morning the halter was moved to the dry covered ring at the Equidome. There the judges named Raherra (*Rahere) Junior Champion Filly with David Boggs at the lead. The Junior Colt Championship roses left the ring with Onitnelav (DA Valentino) and Michael Byatt. Reserve went to Cavalli (DA Valentino) and Sandro Pinha.

The elegant bay mare *Abha Palma (*Marwan Al Shaqab) took home both the Show Champion Mare and the Supreme Show Champion titles with Michael Byatt handling for Abdullah Bin Fahd Bin Abdullah Al-Saud.  *Abha Palma, whose granddam *Abha Hamir was 1979 U.S. and Canadian National Champion Mare, was the 2009 U.S. Reserve National Champion Jr Mare.

The Scottsdale Show Champion Stallion title was taken by EKS Bey Al Gazal and handler Michael Byatt.  EKS Bey Al Gazal is owned by Australian breeders Mystica Arabians.

The title in the Open Western Championship was won by El Milenio with Josh Quintas up. Wendy Potts took roses with Allegience BF in the PB Hunter Pleasure Open, and with Khardinal Sin in the HA Open. The $100,000 AEPA English Classic was won by Brian Murch on ROL Fire Mist (Baske Afire). Nathan Kent won the $50,000 Purebred Reining Futurity on Noble Fantasy and Tyson Randle won the $80,000 Half-Arabian Futurity on TR Skid Mark. Large local crowds at the show were a testament to vigorous marketing by the AHAA. Sunny weather and nearly 2250 Arabian horses were the real heroes, making 2010 Scottsdale a perfect winter break from this year’s over abundance of snow, ice and rain in the rest of North America.

The lovely mare *Abha Palma (*Marwan Al Shaqab x Abha Ghazali) was named Scottsdale Champion Mare and then returned to center ring on Sunday morning and was named 2010 Scottsdale Supreme Champion as well. Shown by Michael Byatt, *Abha Palma is owned by Abdullah Bin Fahd Bin Abdullah Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia.

Since 1955 the Annual Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show has set the pace in the Arabian horse world. The first show was held at the grounds of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel which was a beautiful setting for a horse show. The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show was a first class show from the very first day.

After the show's beginnings at the Arizona Biltmore, Ann McCormick bought 150 acres in Scottsdale and made it into the horse facility known as Paradise Park which served the needs of the show for many years.

Since then, the show has been held at Westworld in Scottsdale. It has grown from 50 horses to nearly 2000 horses bringing top owners, trainers and breeders from around the world competing for a chance at winning. A win at Scottsdale can mean big money in the breeding barns.

The sponsoring organization, the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona, was incorporated in 1955. There were about twelve members when it began and it has grown to over 450 members. As our association has grown so has our annual show. Even though our show is our focal point, our members are active in other ways, representing us on boards and committees at national levels. Many of our members have become judges and stewards and have encouraged our youth to become involved with the horse show as well as other activities. This competition permits them to win Educational Scholarships.

We are very proud of our members and their accomplishments. Through them, as well as other participants and sponsors, our show will continue to grow and offer enjoyment to visitors as well as our own Arizona residents.
